Recorded on location at Memory Lane Comics in Wilmington, North Carolina!

Phantom Troublemaker sits down with Jake, the owner of Memory Lane Comics, a Local Comic Shop which has been operating since 1983. Wilmington has been Phantom’s home away from home for his entire life, and as it turns out he was shopping at Memory Lane when he was just a little Phantom. The opportunity to talk to the current proprietor of such a legendary institution was too good to pass up.

Nobody has quite the same perspective on the comic book industry as the retailers that work within it. Jake’s years of fandom and business experience provide an interesting look at how things have evolved over the years. Plus, his story will be familiar to anyone that has been loyal to their Local Comic Shop for years!

Needless Things Podcast 164 – Wonder Woman

June 8th, 2017
NT%2B164%2Bpic.jpg

The Needless Commentary team convenes live in the Phantom Zone to discuss DC's newest blockbuster – Wonder Woman!

The modern era of films based on the DC Universe has received mixed reviews, to say the least. Man of Steel, Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad while profitable, were far from universally loved. Even within the ranks of the Needless Things Irregulars.

To the point where discussion of said films is strictly verboten.

Fans saw Wonder Woman as an opportunity to leave behind the controversial style that Zack Snyder had brought to the DC films and start anew with a tone of hope, humor, and inspiration. Director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot were almost literally carrying the weight of DC on their shoulders with this new film.

Listen in as Phantom, Rad Ranger, Ryan, and Arian figure out whether or not DC films are back on track in the newest episode of the Needless Things Podcast!

Needless Things Podcast 157 - Thrawn

April 21st, 2017
NT%2B157%2Bpic.jpg

Phantom Troublemaker, Beth V, and Chad J. Shonk discuss Timothy Zahn’s new Star Wars novel, Thrawn, as well as Grand Admiral Thrawn’s history in the galaxy far, far away!

In 1991 Timothy Zahn released the first official, Lucasfilm approved narrative to expand the Star Wars galaxy beyond the events of Return of the Jedi. He continued the adventures of the characters we all knew and loved, but also introduced a number of new characters that would grow to become vital and beloved fixtures in the new ongoing canon of the Expanded Universe (now known as Legends).

Among those characters was Mith’raw’nuruodo, a member of the previously unknown Chiss species. Against all odds he rose through the ranks of the human-centric Empire to attain the rare rank of Grand Admiral, all in order to guard against a threat from outside the galaxy. Thanks to his tactical genius and driven nature, Thrawn became a hugely popular character to EU fans.

When Disney bought Lucasfilm and stated their intention to eject all previous canon, Thrawn was assumed to be lost to the changing tides. But then, late last year, it was announced that the Chiss Imperial would be returning to canon as part of the Rebels animated show, as well as having his history explained in an all-new, in-canon novel by his creator, Timothy Zahn!

Listen in as Phantom, Beth, and Chad discuss the history of one of the Empire’s greatest and most fascinating figures in the newest episode of the Needless Things Podcast!

Needless Things Podcast 145 – The Crow Needless Commentary

February 2nd, 2017
NT%2B145%2Bpic.jpg

Part of an ongoing series – the Needless Things Irregulars gather in the Phantom Zone to provide their own unique commentary on classic genre films!

Released on May 13th, 1994, Alex Proyas's The Crow was the graphic, edgy comic book movie that fans had been wanting since 1989's Batman. The trendsetting soundtrack helped the movie launch a new era of Goth culture while the dark themes of the movie inspired countless teens to don black and start acting all swoopy and dramatic.

Additionally, the tragic on-set death of promising actor Brandon Lee will forever mar this singular film, but at the same time adds an unmatchable gravitas and heaviness.

Listen in as Phantom Troublemaker, Rad Ranger, Ryan Cadaver, and special guest Mike Gordon gather in the Phantom Zone to offer up their thoughts on this 1994 cult classic!

Needless Things Podcast 126 – Dragon Con 2016: GI Joe: A Real American Hero with Larry Hama

September 30th, 2016
NT%2B127%2Bpic.jpg

It’s a LIVE panel from Dragon Con 2016!

A presentation of the American Sci-Fi Classics Track – Larry Hama answers questions about GI Joe, the universe, and everything!

Larry Hama is the man that created identities for the characters of the 1980s iteration of GI Joe – the 3.75” Real American Hero line. He wrote the file cards for the entire toy line. Duke, Zartan, Roadblock, Cobra Commander and all of the rest came from the mind of a man who only ever wanted to draw cartoon animals. And his characterizations were so strong that to this day they are still the touchstones of the franchise, even thirty years later.

Not only is Mr. Hama responsible for these beloved characters’ personalities, he is also the writer for the entire run of the GI Joe: A Real American Hero comic book, which continues to this day.

Listen in as the great Larry Hama discusses topics ranging from the whimsical to the emotional and extremely personal in this incredible episode of the Needless Things Podcast!

Needless Things Podcast 115 – Animation vs. Live Action

July 7th, 2016
NT%2B115%2Bpic.jpg

Phantom Troublemaker and Mike Gordon compare storytelling in animation versus live action!

Over the years it has been every fan’s dream to see their favorite comic book characters adapted into cartoons; be they ongoing or feature-length. From there the next step was live action movies. Adapting original cartoons into live action movies has also been an exciting and anticipated development. To fans, it often felt like acknowledgment or validation that their franchise was important enough to be portrayed in a “real” medium for a mainstream audience.

But over the last two decades animation has evolved into a serious medium unto itself. With visual possibilities that go far beyond what any live action could offer and a storytelling style that can be adapted for everything from kid-friendly content to adults-only stories like Batman: The Killing Joke, is animation now a superior medium to present to fandom?

Listen in as Phantom and Mike debate the pros and cons of animation and live action and take a look at each medium’s service of genre storytelling over the years! Plus, the guys discuss Paul Dini and Eduardo Risso's new graphic novel, Dark Night: A True Batman Story.
