Needless Things Podcast 115 – Animation vs. Live Action
Thursday Jul 07, 2016
Thursday Jul 07, 2016
Phantom Troublemaker and Mike Gordon compare storytelling in animation versus live action!
Over the years it has been every fan’s dream to see their favorite comic book characters adapted into cartoons; be they ongoing or feature-length. From there the next step was live action movies. Adapting original cartoons into live action movies has also been an exciting and anticipated development. To fans, it often felt like acknowledgment or validation that their franchise was important enough to be portrayed in a “real” medium for a mainstream audience.
But over the last two decades animation has evolved into a serious medium unto itself. With visual possibilities that go far beyond what any live action could offer and a storytelling style that can be adapted for everything from kid-friendly content to adults-only stories like Batman: The Killing Joke, is animation now a superior medium to present to fandom?
Listen in as Phantom and Mike debate the pros and cons of animation and live action and take a look at each medium’s service of genre storytelling over the years! Plus, the guys discuss Paul Dini and Eduardo Risso's new graphic novel, Dark Night: A True Batman Story.

Needless Things Podcast 114 – Nickelodeon in the 80s
Thursday Jun 30, 2016
Thursday Jun 30, 2016
Phantom Troublemaker, Ryan Schweck, R.T. Ewell, and Mr. Beau Brown share memories of the entertainment powerhouse that was Nickelodeon in the 1980s!
Nickelodeon was the first television channel for kids and it has a legacy of irreverent, thought-provoking programming going all the way back to 1980. Shows like Mr. Wizard's World and Standby: Lights, Camera, Action! Sought to educate kids about the world around them while programs like You Can't Do That On Television were more subtle about the messages they presented. The 80s were a very different time in American culture and allowed for much edgier content on a channel aimed at children.
Nickelodeon also featured programming expressly aimed at younger kids, as well. From Pinwheel to Today's Special, they set a standard for what the youth of the day expected from their shows.
Listen in as the Needless Things Irregulars reminisce about the glorious, gross, golden age of Nickelodeon!

Friday May 27, 2016
Friday May 27, 2016
PhantomTroublemaker, Beth, and Chad J. Shonk discuss Marvel’s MerryMutants – the X-Men!
Overthe years the corner of the Marvel Universe that was not occupied bythe Avengers has been a place of almost constant change. Evolution, one might say. We’ve beengetting movies with “X” in the title since 200, with wildlyvarying degrees of quality but almost universal success. The newestentry – X-Men:Apocalypse– comes out today and looks to be one of the most divisive entriesso far!
Listenin as Beth, Chad, and Phantom discuss the evolution of theirindividual X-Men fandom and the success – or lack thereof – ofthe various movie adaptations!
